Announcing:

The publication of "The Complete  Win At Euchre" (168 pages)

Scheduled for release in September, 2004

This is the fourth card-game book in my "Complete Win At" Series. It is a comprehensive work on Euchre and features everything from the history of this classic card game to modern Tournament play. Players of all levels will enjoy this book, and it will improve their game.

There are 24 illustrative hands in the book. Here is one of my favorites. Check out this deal from the Bicycle Collegiate Championships, which were held in Orlando, FL in 2000.

The standard game of Euchre has a ten point limit; the first team to score ten points is the winner. When a team reaches nine points, it is said to be "at the Bridge". Some players use the term "in the Barn." The threat of a Loner by the opponents can often snatch victory from the jaws of defeat (for them). If you are the dealer, you must take up the trump if you have a 9-6 or 9-7 lead and after  three passes come to you. This strategy is called "donating."

South picked up the Ace of spades, after three passes. (There was no restriction about having a '"natural" trump as a requirement for ordering or naming trump). Had South turned down the Ace, West would have called Loner, with a fair chance of success. South dropped the nine of clubs (which he held prior to taking up the spade Ace). West led his Ace, as North and East followed, and South burned his lone Ace of trump. Now South tabled the Ace of hearts, West trumped with his lone ten spot, and North and East played low. Another high diamond by West was trumped by North's spade King, East dropped a low club, and South shed his club King. The Ace of clubs was led, and it walked for the third trick for the N/S team. The rest was immaterial. However, the players got a chuckle out of the East player's "orphan" nine of trump. It won the last trick.  Everyone expressed amazement out of the fact that both Bowers were buried in the Kitty, and how all four trump won separate tricks!

A most unusual hand, indeed!
